They Started With Two Left Feet. Five Months Later… They Were Dancing (performing) Kolo

One Stubborn Idea Became Something Bigger
— a simple, true story —

Once upon a time… in Calgary…

A young professional dancer arrived in a city where Kolo had been missing for years.

With more than 500 performances behind him, he had danced on stages across the USA, Europe and Russia. But this time, he wasn’t there to perform.

He wanted to share what he had learned — the steps, the music, the feeling, and most importantly, the joy of belonging to something bigger than yourself.

It was a simple idea.

that turned out to be much bigger than anyone expected.

It wasn’t a business plan.

It wasn’t even a plan to build choreographies.

It was simply:

“Why not teach our people to dance?”

The kids came first.
Then the teenagers, dragged along by their siblings.

Most had never danced Kolo.

A few had what you might politely call TWO LEFT FEET 😄

Then something nobody expected happened.

Watching their kids dance,
the parents got “hungry” too.
Not to watch from the side.
They WANTED to JOIN.

Soon there were about 35-40 dancers —
children,
youth and
parents —
learning – DANCING – PRACTICING – BEING TOGETHER.

One dance became another.
Then another.

They practiced in halls, hallways, garages, schools, buses, on the street — even at work, when they were probably supposed to be doing something else. 😄

The spark had become a fire.

Five / six months later:

Five choreographies.
newly created costumes
PERFORMANCES
A real stage.
An audience that had waited a long time to see this again.

But the best part was never the choreography.

They were dancing TOGETHER

They belonged.

They were proud.

People who had started with:

“I don’t know how.”

ended up saying:

“I CAN.”

There’s a Serbian word for that stubborn little voice that says:

“I don’t know how… but I’ll figure it out.”

INAT

Maybe that’s part of the magic of Kolo.

You don’t have to start as a dancer.
You just have to take the first step.
Watch what happened.
And if it makes you think:

“Maybe I could learn too…”

You probably can.
